This two-day workshop will flex your zoom-shortcut-key muscle and train your eye to see the small details that make all forms of typesetting elegant and effortless. We will learn all the permitted cheats, hacks, and shortcuts all in the name of improving your understanding of typography at the micro-level. Learn how to be efficient but also understand the principles of why certain methods work. We will look at the best ways to kern and space type. We'll learn how to quickly establish hierarchy with minimal means. We'll find tricks to make perfect-looking paragraphs. We will investigate how, why, and when to use all the fancy glyphs in fonts. This workshop is for anyone who wants to improve their skill in working with type, whether it's designing an app or designing your resume. All the ideas and most tricks translate to various pieces of software like InDesign, Illustrator, Affinity, Sketch, Figma, Word, etc. Beginners are welcome.


    Required Materials

  • A computer or laptop with any typesetting software installed


A link to join the Zoom meetings and a Slack group will be emailed to enrolled students a day or two before the first session.

Class size will be limited to 14 student to insure plenty of one on one feedback during the course.

Instructor: Alexander Tochilovsky

Micro Typography
Alexander Tochilovsky is a graphic designer, typographer, curator and educator, with nearly 20 years of professional design experience, and 10 years experience teaching typography. He graduated with a BFA from The Cooper Union, and holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is currently the Curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography. In 2009 he co-curated the exhibition Lubalin Now, and since 2010 he has curated five other exhibitions: Appetite (2010), Pharma (2011), Type@Cooper (2012), Image of the Studio (2013), & Thirty (2015). Since 2007 he has taught typography and design at the Cooper Union School of Art, and also teaches the history of typeface design at Type@Cooper, the postgraduate certificate program he co-founded in 2010.
