Making powerful images requires the ability to control value, shape, and color. Through weekly assignments, skills demos, presentations, and regular feedback you will:

➢ Apply an ideation process to solve illustration problems
➢ Control value and silhouette to create great black & white images
➢ Quickly explore multiple color options with digital editing
➢ Understand color relationships through limited color problems
➢ Use color to communication message, tone, and audience

Materials & Technology

You can work in any medium—oil paint, cut-paper, digital drawing—but you will also need: 1.) Procreate or Photoshop for digital editing exercises, 2.) Camera or scanner if working analog (A cell phone camera will work. All assignment submissions are digital.), and 3.) Reliable internet connection and a device on which to participate on Zoom

Experience/Requirements

TIME: Be able to commit 6–12 hours outside of class per week.

DRAWING: Prior drawing experience is required. Instructor will provide drawing feedback for a range of experience levels, but course instruction will be focused on value, color, and digital editing.

PHOTOSHOP/PROCREATE: Instructor will be teaching how to work with selections, layer masks, and color properties. If you don’t have any digital editing experience, she can provide tutorial links prior to the start of class.


Registration opens May 3, 2022 around 10 am EDT.

We will meet over Zoom for 10 sessions, Saturdays noon–3 CST (Miriam is in the mid-west), June 4–August 13. Class will not meet July 2. A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students prior to the first session. Enrollment is limited to 14 students to allow for feedback and discussion.

Miriam Martincic is an award-winning illustrator whose work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators New York, Communication Arts, Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, 3x3, and others. Clients include Harper’s, Scientific American, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Miriam is a freelance illustrator and Teaching Professor of graphic design at Iowa State University.
