Making powerful images requires not just good ideas, but the ability to control value, shape, and color. Through detailed slide presentations, skill-building demos, assignments, and regular feedback, you will:

· Learn an ideation process to solve illustration problems
· Control value and silhouette to create great black & white images
· Learn digital editing strategies to color images
· Understand color relationships through limited color problems
· Use color to communication message, tone, and audience

Materials & Technology

Contemporary illustrators use oil paint, cut-paper, digital drawing, collage, 3-d rendering, and more. You can work in any medium you choose, but you will also need:

· Procreate or Photoshop for digital editing exercises
· Camera or scanner if working analog (All assignment submissions are digital. A cell phone camera will work.)
· Reliable internet connection and a device on which to participate on Zoom

This class is open to all students who love to make images, are eager to learn, and can commit 6–12 hours outside of class per week.
Experience with Photoshop/Procreate is helpful but not required.

Note: This is an illustration class with a focus on value structure and color. This is not a drawing class.

We will meet over Zoom for 10 sessions, Saturdays noon–3 CST, February 12– April 16.
A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students prior to the first session. Enrollment is limited to 14 students to allow for feedback and discussion.
