Brush up on the basics| Practice creating structured and expressive layouts, crafting elegant details, and honing your storytelling skills while designing a typographic poster. Use grids to organize content, build hierarchy, and generate emotionally resonant visual elements. During this all-day session, each participant will follow along with peers and faculty in a step-by-step process. The workshop is designed to bring new focus to each participant’s individual approach to typographic thinking and decision-making. Participants receive active feedback throughout the day in a unique online setting that maximizes hands-on engagement.


    Required Materials

  • A computer or laptop with Adobe InDesign installed
  • A notebooks and sketching materials
  • reliable internet connection


This class will meet for 2 consecutive Wednesdday evenings. Class will take place over Zoom. A link to join will be emailed to enrolled students a day or two before the first session.

Grid Systems Type Spa
Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, educator, and designer. She is Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Recent exhibitions include Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial (with Andreas Lipps), How Posters Work, Beautiful Users and The Senses:Design Beyond Vision. Lupton also serves as director of the Graphic Design MFA Program at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) in Baltimore, where she has authored numerous books on design processes, including Thinking with Type, Graphic Design Thinking, Graphic Design: The New Basics, and Type on Screen. Her book, Design Is Storytelling, was published by Cooper Hewitt in 2017. Lupton earned her BFA from The Cooper Union in 1985.
