Could MTV’s Pimp My Ride act as a blueprint for drawing a dynamic piece of lettering? With cars as with drawing, a solid foundation ensures that the whole vehicle hums along harmoniously. And a little bling goes a long way towards drafting souped-up, high-gloss letters that are sure to turn heads.
By using professional font editing technology made available to typeface designers rolled into a workflow with Adobe Illustrator, designers can draft clean and consistent lettering well prepared to be tricked out. In this hands-on workshop, participants will begin by hand lettering, learn to vectorize the forms using Glyphs, and generate the letters needed for a lettering piece to be developed further in Illustrator. These digital tools allow for maximum flexibility and potential to explore effects like shades, shadows, highlight, out and inlines, bevels, prismatic effects, warps and beyond. Students will leave with a methodology for drawing structurally-sound letters, and a bevy of styling techniques to explore further.
This workshop is intended for students, recent grads and working professionals looking to create custom lettering and type treatments that's well-structured, full of life, and open to personal infusion.

- Laptop computer with Adobe Illustrator and Glyphs installed (a free temporary student license will be provided)
- Hand drawing materials, pencil, sharpener, eraser, paper, tracing paper
- Optionally, a tablet with drawing program (i.e.: iPad with Procreate)

Kyle Letendre
Kyle Letendre is a lettering artist, illustrator and type designer based in Portland, Oregon. Born and raised in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, they obtained a BFA in Graphic Design from Columbia College Chicago in 2011, and completed the Type@Cooper Condensed Program in 2021. Informed by their background in screen-printing and drawing, Kyle’s work explores forms as vessels for expression, blurring the binaries between type and image.
Since 2016, Kyle has operated an independent, one-person studio focusing on commercial lettering, illustration and graphic design. Their fusion of flair and function have attracted clients such Target, Penguin Random House, Mercedes-Benz, Lee Jeans, New Belgium Beer, Instagram, and YouTube.
